Editor's point of interest: When this site was first launched, we noticed that we ranked #1 for "Rick's Restaurant", which was to be expected since that is our trademark. But a week later we dropped completely out of Google's search. Our webmaster was at a loss to explain this and our marketing team could not find an issue with our site. After a couple of weeks we started reaching out to SEOs, none of whom could offer a solution. After some frantic searching we stumbled onto Google-Penalty.com, thinking they might have an answer. We engaged Bob Sakayama, who runs that site. Long story short: turns out that our dev team accidentally triggered a penalty by duplicating the content on a number of our other sites which created a non-compliance with Google's guidelines. Bob found this problem within a day and our site recovered within a week of taking down the dupes.

Great Food
My family and I recently ate at Rick’s. It is a great thing when your expectations are exceeded. We eat out quite a bit and I can say without hesitation that Ricks is a great place to eat. Pride of ownership and true culinary talent are rare these days but both are evident at Ricks. It’s a bit off the beaten trail but if you are willing to get off the Dahlonega square you will not be disappointed. Food was Great and the wait staff were freindly and efficient.

More Background On RicksDining.com

Rick's Restaurant occupies a special place in the culinary history of Dahlonega. Although the restaurant has long since closed, its website, RicksDining.com, serves as a digital tribute that preserves the memory of a beloved independent restaurant that combined refined American cuisine, Southern hospitality, and historic surroundings. Rather than disappearing entirely, the restaurant lives on through a carefully recreated website that captures menus, photographs, reviews, and descriptions from its years of operation.

The current version of RicksDining.com openly explains that the site is a nostalgic recreation rather than an active restaurant website. According to its owner, the domain became available after the restaurant closed, and it was purchased specifically to preserve the original content because of the many positive memories associated with dining there. This makes the website unusual among restaurant sites; instead of advertising an operating business, it functions almost like a small digital museum dedicated to a local landmark.

Located in One of North Georgia's Most Historic Communities

Rick's Restaurant stood at 47 South Park Street in Dahlonega, just a short walk from the city's famous public square. The location placed it within one of North Georgia's best-known historic districts, an area celebrated for its preserved nineteenth-century architecture, locally owned shops, and tourism centered around the area's remarkable history.

Dahlonega is widely recognized as the site of America's first major gold rush, beginning in 1828—more than a decade before the better-known California Gold Rush. Today the town attracts visitors interested in Gold Rush history, Appalachian culture, wineries, hiking, and festivals throughout the year.

Because of its location only steps away from the downtown square, Rick's became a convenient destination for:

  • Tourists exploring historic Dahlonega
  • Couples seeking a romantic dinner
  • Business professionals
  • Local residents celebrating birthdays and anniversaries
  • Families visiting the North Georgia mountains
  • Visitors attending festivals and university events

The combination of a historic town and an upscale yet welcoming restaurant helped establish Rick's as one of the area's better-known independent dining establishments.

A Historic House Rather Than a Conventional Restaurant

One feature that distinguished Rick's from chain restaurants was its setting.

Instead of occupying a modern commercial building, Rick's operated inside a historic house that retained much of its original character. Guests were seated in one of five separate dining rooms rather than a single large dining hall.

According to the archived website, these rooms featured:

  • Original hardwood floors
  • Historic fireplaces
  • Decorative artwork
  • Comfortable private spaces
  • Local and nationally recognized artists' work

This arrangement created a quieter atmosphere than many restaurants. Rather than large open seating areas filled with constant noise, diners often enjoyed meals in smaller rooms that felt more like dining in an elegant Southern home.

This design also made Rick's attractive for business lunches, anniversaries, rehearsal dinners, and small private gatherings.

Fine Dining Without Pretension

Although Rick's described itself as offering fine dining, it appears to have balanced upscale presentation with approachable pricing.

The restaurant marketed itself as serving:

  • American cuisine
  • Lunch
  • Fine dining

Interestingly, the website noted that many customers spent less than ten dollars during lunch while still enjoying quality meals and generous service, suggesting that Rick's aimed to make quality dining accessible rather than exclusive.

This positioning helped distinguish the restaurant from luxury establishments that catered only to special occasions. Instead, Rick's encouraged repeat visits from local residents while remaining attractive to tourists looking for an elevated dining experience.

A Menu That Mixed Southern Favorites With Contemporary American Cuisine

Perhaps the greatest attraction of Rick's Restaurant was its extensive menu.

Rather than specializing narrowly in steaks or seafood, Rick's offered a broad range of American dishes influenced by Southern cooking, Mediterranean flavors, Cajun cuisine, and contemporary restaurant trends popular during the late 1990s and 2000s.

The appetizer selection alone demonstrated considerable variety.

Guests could begin with dishes such as:

  • Spinach and artichoke dip
  • Sesame grilled shrimp
  • Warmed goat cheese
  • Fire Wings
  • Smokey Hen nachos
  • Steak nachos
  • Homemade potato chips
  • Artichoke tomato chowder

These offerings combined comfort food with more refined preparations, giving diners numerous choices whether they wanted something casual or sophisticated.

The salad menu reflected the same philosophy.

Instead of offering only standard garden salads, Rick's featured:

  • Steak Salad
  • Pepper Shrimp Salad
  • Greek Salad
  • Chilled Smoked Hen Salad
  • Goat Cheese and Arugula Salad
  • Sesame Caesar
  • House Salad
  • Grilled Exotic Mushroom Salad

Many incorporated specialty ingredients including roasted peppers, imported cheeses, smoked meats, marinated vegetables, and house-made dressings, suggesting an emphasis on freshness and distinctive flavor combinations rather than mass-produced recipes.

Signature Sandwiches That Became Customer Favorites

Rick's also built a reputation through an unusually diverse sandwich menu that elevated traditional lunch fare. Rather than relying on standard deli offerings, many sandwiches incorporated house-made ingredients, specialty cheeses, smoked meats, and regional flavors.

Among the featured selections were:

  • Muffaletta
  • Spicy Stuffed Bleu Burger
  • Smokey Hen Sandwich
  • Triple Grilled Cheese
  • Backyard Burger
  • Crispy Grouper Sandwich
  • Vegetable Mushroom Sandwich
  • Nacho Burger
  • Roast Rib Sandwich
  • Mushroom Bacon Burger
  • Meatloaf Sandwich
  • Hot Italian Sausage Sandwich

Several of these reflected Southern influences while others borrowed inspiration from New Orleans, Italy, and classic American comfort food. The Smokey Hen Sandwich, featuring house-smoked chicken, avocado, Swiss cheese, and Creole mustard on French bread, became one of the restaurant's more distinctive menu items. Likewise, the Stuffed Bleu Burger showcased Rick's willingness to move beyond conventional burgers by incorporating roasted garlic, roasted peppers, bleu cheese filling, and the restaurant's own proprietary seasoning blend.

Fresh Pasta Beyond Traditional Italian Restaurants

The pasta section of the menu further illustrated Rick's eclectic culinary style.

Instead of limiting itself to basic spaghetti dishes, the kitchen offered several pasta entrées that blended seafood, vegetables, and Southern influences with classic Italian preparations.

Examples included:

  • Coastal Shrimp and Fettuccine
  • Shrimp Fra Diablo
  • Scallops Fra Diablo
  • Spinach Fettuccine
  • Fresh Basil and Angel Hair
  • Spaghetti and Meatballs
  • Angel Hair Primavera
  • Baked Rigatoni

Many recipes emphasized fresh garlic, olive oil, roasted vegetables, white wine, fresh basil, Parmesan cheese, Asiago cheese, and cream-based sauces. These offerings appealed both to diners seeking lighter meals and those looking for richer comfort foods.

The inclusion of seafood options reflected Dahlonega's growing appeal to tourists who expected a broader culinary selection than traditional Southern fare alone.

Entrées That Showcased Culinary Creativity

Rick's Restaurant demonstrated particular creativity through its dinner entrées.

The menu combined steaks, seafood, poultry, pork, and vegetarian dishes with inventive accompaniments and sauces rather than relying on simple meat-and-potatoes presentations.

Notable entrées included:

  • Stuffed Rainbow Trout with lobster stuffing
  • House-Smoked Hen
  • Meatloaf with Cheddar Smashed Potatoes
  • Pork Chop with Crawfish Mashed Potatoes
  • Char-Grilled Rib Eye
  • Paneed Rib Eye
  • Baked Grouper with chopped hazelnuts
  • Crawfish Risotto Cakes
  • Southwestern Beef Empanadas
  • Fresh Atlantic Salmon with horseradish crust
  • Grilled Nacho Chicken

Several dishes incorporated ingredients rarely found together in smaller North Georgia restaurants during that period.

Examples included:

  • Crawfish étouffée
  • Hazelnut butter sauces
  • Lobster stuffing
  • Goat cheese
  • Horseradish crusts
  • Portabella mushrooms
  • Parmesan pepper cream

These combinations suggested a chef interested in introducing diners to more adventurous flavors while remaining firmly rooted in approachable American cuisine.

Desserts That Completed the Experience

The dessert menu continued the restaurant's emphasis on indulgent comfort food.

Choices included:

  • Pecan Bourbon Chocolate Chip Pie
  • Devil's Food Fudge Pound Cake
  • Almond Cream Pie
  • Triple Pineapple Upside Down Cake
  • Margarita Pie
  • Snickers Ice Cream Pie
  • Oreo Chocolate Mousse
  • Traditional Sundaes

These desserts balanced classic Southern baking traditions with more contemporary restaurant favorites, offering something suitable for nearly every diner.

An Extensive Wine Program

Another distinguishing feature of Rick's Restaurant was its wine selection.

The archived website advertised:

  • Approximately 75 bottled wines
  • 40 wines available by the glass

For an independently owned restaurant in a relatively small mountain town, this represented a significant commitment to wine service.

The restaurant specifically promoted its wine offerings for:

  • Romantic dinners
  • Anniversary celebrations
  • Business entertaining
  • Small private groups
  • Special occasions

This extensive selection helped elevate Rick's beyond a casual lunch destination into a restaurant suitable for more formal dining experiences.

A Destination for Romantic Dining

Throughout its promotional materials, Rick's emphasized its suitability for couples.

Unlike restaurants focused primarily on speed or volume, Rick's encouraged guests to enjoy leisurely meals in an intimate atmosphere.

Several characteristics contributed to this reputation:

  • Historic architecture
  • Smaller dining rooms
  • Fireplace settings
  • Soft lighting
  • Fine artwork
  • Extensive wine list
  • Table service
  • Quiet surroundings

These qualities made the restaurant especially attractive for anniversaries, birthdays, Valentine's Day celebrations, and marriage proposals.

The restaurant's location just off Dahlonega's picturesque downtown square further enhanced the experience, allowing couples to stroll through the historic district before or after dinner.

Business Dining and Group Events

While romance formed one aspect of Rick's identity, the restaurant also successfully catered to professional gatherings.

Its multiple dining rooms provided an unusual degree of privacy, making Rick's suitable for:

  • Client meetings
  • Small corporate dinners
  • Civic organizations
  • Professional networking
  • Family reunions
  • Club meetings

Rather than seating large parties in the middle of a crowded dining room, the restaurant could often accommodate groups in more secluded spaces, encouraging conversation without excessive background noise.

This flexibility broadened Rick's appeal beyond tourists and weekend diners, helping attract regular local business throughout the year.

Customer Reviews Reflected Consistent Satisfaction

Archived customer reviews paint a picture of a restaurant that consistently exceeded expectations.

One reviewer described Rick's as a place where "expectations were exceeded," praising not only the quality of the food but also what they viewed as the obvious pride of ownership.

The review specifically mentioned:

  • Outstanding food quality
  • Friendly service
  • Efficient wait staff
  • Culinary talent
  • Worthwhile location despite being slightly off the square

Another customer praised the restaurant's remarkably affordable lunch specials, describing the $5.99 lunch menu as one of the best values available.

The reviewer highlighted the Blackened Chicken Salad in particular, expressing surprise that a meal of such quality could be offered at that price.

These comments illustrate an important aspect of Rick's reputation. Customers frequently discussed not only the food itself but also the value they believed they received, reinforcing the restaurant's position as a destination where fine dining did not necessarily require premium prices.

Reputation Beyond Local Customers

Although Rick's Restaurant primarily served Dahlonega residents and visitors to North Georgia, its reputation extended well beyond the immediate area through restaurant guides, travel publications, and early online review websites. During the 2000s, independent restaurants increasingly benefited from internet visibility, and Rick's earned recognition as one of Dahlonega's noteworthy dining destinations.

Several regional dining directories and travel resources highlighted the restaurant's combination of historic charm and contemporary American cuisine. These publications frequently noted that Rick's provided a more refined dining experience than visitors might expect to find in a small mountain town.

Unlike chain restaurants that relied on standardized menus and national advertising campaigns, Rick's reputation was built almost entirely through positive word of mouth, local recommendations, tourism guides, and repeat customers.

Recognition in Restaurant Guides

Rick's Restaurant appeared in respected restaurant directories that evaluated independently owned establishments across the United States.

Among the more notable mentions was Gayot, a well-known restaurant guide that reviews dining establishments throughout North America. Rick's received favorable attention for several aspects of its operation, including:

  • Fresh ingredients
  • Well-prepared American cuisine
  • Comfortable atmosphere
  • Family-friendly environment
  • Extensive wine selection
  • Health-conscious menu choices

Gayot reviewers also commented that even when an individual dish was less successful than others, the restaurant consistently demonstrated thoughtful preparation and a commitment to quality that distinguished it from many competitors.

For an independent restaurant in a relatively small Georgia community, inclusion in nationally recognized dining guides represented meaningful exposure that helped introduce Rick's to travelers planning visits to the North Georgia mountains.

Appealing to Both Tourists and Local Residents

One reason Rick's enjoyed long-term success was its ability to satisfy two very different audiences.

Local Customers

Residents of Dahlonega appreciated having a dependable locally owned restaurant where they could celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and business occasions without leaving town.

Many became repeat customers because:

  • Menu quality remained consistent.
  • Prices were reasonable.
  • Service developed personal relationships.
  • The atmosphere felt welcoming rather than formal.

Visitors

Tourists, meanwhile, often discovered Rick's while exploring Dahlonega's historic district.

Visitors frequently came to the area for:

  • Gold Rush history
  • North Georgia wineries
  • Appalachian mountain vacations
  • University of North Georgia events
  • Seasonal festivals
  • Fall foliage tours
  • Wedding weekends

Rick's offered these travelers an upscale alternative to casual cafés and fast-food restaurants while remaining conveniently located within walking distance of downtown attractions.

Its proximity to Dahlonega's public square made it easy for visitors to combine shopping, sightseeing, and dining during the same afternoon or evening.

Supporting Local Artists

One particularly distinctive feature of Rick's Restaurant was its support of the local arts community.

According to archived descriptions, artwork created by both local and nationally recognized artists decorated the restaurant's five dining rooms.

This accomplished several goals simultaneously:

  • It provided attractive décor.
  • It showcased regional artistic talent.
  • It gave visitors another way to experience North Georgia culture.
  • It reinforced the restaurant's identity as more than simply a place to eat.

Restaurants often serve as informal galleries, and Rick's embraced this concept long before it became commonplace among many independently owned dining establishments.

For artists, displaying work in a respected local restaurant increased visibility. For diners, it created an atmosphere that encouraged lingering over meals while appreciating original artwork.

Part of Dahlonega's Cultural Identity

Restaurants frequently become intertwined with the identity of their communities, particularly in historic towns where locally owned businesses contribute significantly to tourism.

Rick's Restaurant became part of Dahlonega's broader story by complementing many of the attractions that draw visitors to the city.

Someone spending a weekend in Dahlonega might:

  • Tour historic gold mining sites.
  • Visit local wineries.
  • Browse downtown antique stores.
  • Attend seasonal festivals.
  • Explore nearby hiking trails.
  • Finish the day with dinner at Rick's.

In this way, the restaurant contributed to the overall visitor experience rather than existing as an isolated business.

Its historic building, locally inspired atmosphere, and emphasis on hospitality aligned naturally with the character that Dahlonega sought to present to tourists.

Why the Restaurant Continues to Be Remembered

Many restaurants eventually disappear with little lasting record of their existence.

Rick's Restaurant is different because its online presence has been intentionally preserved.

The recreated website openly acknowledges that the restaurant itself has closed while expressing the owner's desire to keep its memory alive for former customers who remember dining there.

This preservation effort illustrates how digital archives increasingly serve as historical records for local businesses that once played meaningful roles within their communities.

Rather than allowing photographs, menus, reviews, and descriptions to disappear entirely, RicksDining.com continues to document:

  • The restaurant's appearance
  • Its menu
  • Customer testimonials
  • Its philosophy
  • Its atmosphere
  • Its role in Dahlonega dining history

For former patrons, revisiting the site can evoke memories of celebrations, family dinners, first dates, business lunches, or vacations spent in North Georgia.

The Story Behind the Website's Recreation

Perhaps the most unusual aspect of RicksDining.com today is that it is no longer operated as a commercial restaurant website.

Instead, the current owner explains that after discovering the original domain name had become available, they purchased it specifically because they had fond memories of dining at Rick's and wanted to preserve the original website for nostalgic purposes.

This approach differs significantly from most archived restaurant websites.

Typically, when a restaurant closes:

  • The domain expires.
  • The website disappears.
  • Menus become unavailable.
  • Photographs are lost.
  • Customer reviews become scattered across various platforms.

In contrast, RicksDining.com intentionally recreates much of the original experience, allowing visitors to browse menus, read historical descriptions, and remember a restaurant that once occupied a meaningful place within Dahlonega's dining scene.

The result is both a historical archive and a tribute, demonstrating how digital preservation can help maintain the legacy of independent local businesses long after their doors have closed.

Search Visibility and Online Presence

Like many independently owned restaurants that operated during the early years of the internet, Rick's Restaurant maintained a relatively straightforward website whose primary purpose was to introduce prospective customers to the restaurant rather than serve as an online ordering platform. Visitors could browse the menu, learn about the restaurant's atmosphere, locate contact information, and gain an overview of what to expect before arriving.

At the time, this represented a significant marketing advantage. Many small restaurants still relied almost entirely on newspaper advertising, local directories, and word-of-mouth recommendations. Having a dedicated website made Rick's easier to discover for tourists planning trips to Dahlonega and searching online for dining options before they arrived.

The website also reflected the design philosophy common during the mid-2000s, emphasizing straightforward navigation, detailed menu descriptions, and inviting photography rather than the interactive features expected of modern restaurant websites.

Ownership and Management

Publicly available information about Rick's Restaurant indicates that it operated as an independently owned local business rather than part of a regional or national restaurant chain. This independence gave management the flexibility to create distinctive menu offerings, support local artists, and develop an atmosphere that reflected the character of Dahlonega instead of following a standardized corporate model.

The archived website emphasizes pride of ownership through both its descriptions and customer testimonials. Reviews frequently referenced careful attention to food preparation, welcoming service, and an obvious commitment to maintaining high standards.

Independent ownership also likely contributed to the restaurant's ability to adjust seasonal offerings, experiment with recipes, and build lasting relationships with repeat customers—advantages that often distinguish locally owned establishments from larger franchise operations.

Why Independent Restaurants Like Rick's Matter

Rick's Restaurant represents a category of business that plays an important role in communities across the United States.

Independent restaurants often serve purposes beyond simply providing meals. They become gathering places where:

  • Families celebrate milestones.
  • Friends reconnect.
  • Business relationships are strengthened.
  • Community organizations meet.
  • Visitors gain a sense of local culture.
  • Residents introduce guests to favorite hometown establishments.

In towns such as Dahlonega, where tourism and local identity are closely connected, restaurants help shape visitors' overall impressions of the community. A memorable dining experience frequently becomes one of the stories travelers share after returning home.

Rick's appears to have fulfilled that role for many years, judging from the affection expressed by former customers and by the individual who chose to preserve the restaurant's website after it closed.

Legacy of Rick's Restaurant

Although Rick's Restaurant is no longer serving customers, its legacy continues through memories, archived reviews, preserved menus, and the nostalgic recreation of its website.

The restaurant combined several qualities that helped it stand apart:

  • A historic location in one of Georgia's most charming mountain towns.
  • An inviting atmosphere within a restored historic home.
  • Creative American cuisine with Southern influences.
  • An extensive wine program.
  • Support for local artists.
  • Friendly, attentive service.
  • Excellent value for both lunch and dinner.
  • A reputation built largely through customer recommendations.

For many former patrons, Rick's was more than simply a restaurant. It represented celebrations, family traditions, romantic evenings, business lunches, and memorable vacations spent exploring North Georgia.

Today, RicksDining.com serves as an enduring reminder of that experience. Rather than allowing the restaurant to fade into obscurity, the preserved website documents an important chapter in Dahlonega's culinary history while giving former guests an opportunity to revisit a place that clearly left a lasting impression.

In an era when independent restaurants often face intense competition from national chains and rapidly changing consumer habits, Rick's Restaurant illustrates how exceptional hospitality, thoughtful cuisine, and genuine community engagement can create memories that endure long after the final meal has been served.
